Roofing Information, Cost & Free Price Quotes
There are several ways to prepare for a roof installation. One of the first
things that must be done involves providing a place for the roofing material
that will be installed and removed. Regardless of whether you are doing the roof
replacement yourself or hiring a professional roofer, it is still your
responsibility to safely discard all materials and temporarily store new
materials.
Most roofing companies use a dump truck to transfer the old roofing material
from your roof to the appropriate place off your property. This is the fastest
and easiest way to remove the materials. Materials generally include the old
roofing material, the building paper, the old sub-roof, and roofing nails. Keep
in mind, it is impossible to keep track of every nail that comes off your roof
so be prepared for stray roofing nails to end up in your yard near the dump
truck.
Helpful Preparation Steps
- To avoid loosing nails in your yard, you may want to keep track of them by
placing a tarp on your lawn near the dump truck or the around the place that you
are stashing the old materials.
- If a crane is being used to lift the new materials on your roof, make sure you
have a place available for the crane to be position at. People usually use the
same spot that the dump truck was at.
- If you have shrubs around the base of your house that are important to you, you
might consider temporarily covering them with plywood. This will protect them
from falling roof debris.
- If your attic is full of possessions, junk, etc., a new roof installation is the
best time to clean it out. You can toss what you don’t want into the dumpster
that holds the old roofing material.
- If you want to make sure that the job is being done correctly you should clear
your schedule on the first day of installation so that you can personally
supervise the job. Keep an eye on wood replacement, fascia, gable vents, etc.
You should also insure that they re-install all of the plumbing stacks, hood
vents, and other roof fixtures. You don’t want your roof contractors shorting
you in any way.
- Prepare for unexpected rain by investing in some large tarps. You will want to
secure them tightly if needed. Rain can cause all sorts of damage and may result
in replacing all attic insulation, drywall on the ceiling, and texturing.
- Make sure you speak with the roofing company prior to installation so that you
know exactly what to expect.
