Tile roofs are available in both clay and concrete. Clay tiles help define the
architectural character of a home with its great variety of textures, colors and
shapes. Clay tiles are an impressive design element because they retain their
color over time. Concrete tiles, consisting primarily of concrete and sand, come
in a limitless array of colors and designs. Designs can simulate the appearance
of clay tiles, stone, slate and wood shake. Like clay, concrete can be textured
or smooth. Also, colors can be blended, combined, or left alone.
Unfortunately, tile roofs tend to be very heavy and often require reinforcement.
However, sometimes manufacturers offer a light weight clay tile that can be used
without reinforcement. Generally, tile roofing is more expensive than wood shake
roofs or asphalt shingles, but tile also has a higher life expectancy. Not to
mention it has the added benefits of being resistant to extreme weather
conditions, fireproof with a class A rating, a wonderful insulator, and tile
